Question about certing up welders

Question about certing up welders

Question about certing up welders

(OP)
I need to certify some welders in all nickel base materials. (ex. P41 thur P47). The question I have is there one certain Nickel Base material I can have them do a weld coupon for that will certify them in all Nikel Base material, or do I need to have them do a weld coupon pre material.

RE: Question about certing up welders

Review ASME Section IX, QW-420. Welding for only one of the P-No 41 through P-No 49 base materials qualifies the welder for all base materials within this grouping.

RE: Question about certing up welders

(OP)
Ok... I just read QW-420. So if I'm reading this correctly. I can have a test coupon that is weld with P-No 44 to P-No 44, and that will qualify that welder for P-No 34, P-No 41 Thur P-No 47. because they are all in the same Group No. Even though the P-No changes.

RE: Question about certing up welders

Group number is not a factor. See QW-423. If welders are currently qualified to P1 then they are also qualified for P41-P49...depending on F number. Also, welding P41 - P49 will only qualify welder for all, not WPS. For WPS see QW-424
