Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

(OP)
Per Canadian Electrical Code, a separate service feeder ahead of the main building disconnect or a separate service directly from the utility transformer is required for the fire pump. Having said that I have seen many installations where the fire pump is fed from a branch lockable breaker from the service entrance board. I couldn't find anywhere or any code/regulation that accepts above practice. Can somebody shed some lights when and what instances above practice is acceptable? Thanks

RE: Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

Just might be that set up because of the electric utility company rules.

RE: Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

Kitha's concerns are very real and valid. I commonly find plan reviews and installations where breaker or disconnect is installed between the fire pump controller and the utility power source. NEC Section 695.3 itme (1) clearly states the wiring requirement and Section 230.82 (5). Basically, the fire pump controller is the disconnect and nothing should interrupt the path from the utility source to the fire pump.

CDA, the electric utility has no regulatory authority in this matter and if you are trusting the utility to ensure the fire pump is wired correctly, that is a gross error in judgement.

RE: Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

I have heard that some people interpret that the wiring even bypasses a meter for the building or pump

RE: Separate Service Feeder to fire pump

We have a utility company that requires the disconnect I went around and around with them on this issue . They said if you do not install the switch, then get power from someone else. Oh yea they only required 2 times max amps not the 6 times locked rotor NFPA 20 requires. As a result most times I run into this utility company service area they are not sized properly. I hear the utility said it was OK!!
