corrosion engineer from chemical engineering

(OP)
dear all,

i am a junior process engineer in the oil and gas company for 6 months, and this is my first job. because of several reasons, i heard that my company wants me to be a corrosion engineer. is it ok for a person graduating from chemical engineering to be a corrosion engineer ? what about the job desk of corrosion engineer ? i hope you tell me . thank you :)

RE: corrosion engineer from chemical engineering

Things always rust- you'll never be out of work. Chem eng is the best basic training for corrosion engineering- but you need more than that. Find out how your company intends to help you to grow into that role. A good mentor will be important.

RE: corrosion engineer from chemical engineering

Many corrosion engineers started out in metallurgy, but you have an advantage of better understanding many of the treatment chemicals.
Some course work in corrosion, training in field inspection, assisting with some failure analysis, and a good mentor will get you well along the path.
In all honesty it will be a couple of years before you are much good at this, and then it will take another 30 years to feel comfortable.
It seems like half of the failures that I see I can handle by taking out an old report and printing a new cover page for it. The other half are things that I haven't seen in my 30 years on the job.

It would be very helpful for you if you network with other corrosion engineers. You should join NACE and utilize their resources.
