deflection control of tall cantilever beam

deflection control of tall cantilever beam

(OP)
hello everyone

i had one question as follows

i am using
tall column of 1000 mm and 30 m tall
material i am using is austenitic stainless steel type 304 for shell
but i am not getting deflection control of 6 ft per 100 inch

i had tried increasing the skirt thickness same as my shell thickness
even i had tried to flare my skirt upto 15 degree
but m not geting control on deflection

for being economical side i cant change the bottom shell course thickness

can anyone advice/ suggest me what changes i need to make for controling my deflection upto limit of 6 inch per 100 ft

RE: deflection control of tall cantilever beam

I assume "column" is process column, ie, pressure vessel, and not a structural column?

Obvious solution would be to increase the diameter. If that isn't feasible, consider guy wires or building structural steel frame around or adjacent to it. Possibly truss rods on 2 or 4 sides.

At those dimensions, check for vortex shedding vibration, which is liable to control the design.

RE: deflection control of tall cantilever beam

Your column is too slender. The only way you can reduce deflection is by increasing the moment of inertia of the column section.
