Built up wood beam bearing on wood post of narrower dimension

Built up wood beam bearing on wood post of narrower dimension

Built up wood beam bearing on wood post of narrower dimension

(OP)
The width of an existing built-up 4-ply beam of 2x12's is 6". It bears on a 5.5" square wood post. The beam has been built so that one face is flush with the face of the post below, but the other face of the beam is 1/2" beyond the post below.

Is that ok, or should a 2x6 be wedged tight to the beam soffit and fastened to the side of the post, so that the beam is bearing for its full 6" width?

RE: Built up wood beam bearing on wood post of narrower dimension

You don't have to provide full bearing but, if the outer ply is to be considered structurally active, the load that it carries will have to make its way back to the post via some competent path.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
