Its been around for a long time, Google 'mitered rabbet joint'. Reasons for it not to become common in this case is because a drawer bottom never needs to be same thickness as sides thus making it too expensive from a production point of view.

Also, sides x2 plus bottom tend not to fit nice width-wise across a sheet.
