Revised wood framing

Revised wood framing

Revised wood framing

(OP)
Hello,
I am adding a second level to an existing one-storey house. The contractor, instead of placing the new joists on the existing wall plates, he raised the floor by adding 2-2x6 on the perimeter to keep the ceiling. The existing ceiling joists are now nailed to the new 2-2x6 as shown in the attached. In my opinion, this is not as good as the conventional way of framing since the 2-2x6 can topple even through the ceiling joists are nailed to them. I don't like it and am planning to reject what he did unless there is a way to fix it. Any comments will be appreciated.

RE: Revised wood framing

Done all the time in flat roof situations. No problem as long as the new 2x6's are nailed off securely to the existing roof diaphragm and blocking below.

Thanks Mike. This is the second floor, not the roof. The floor joists, which are I-joists sit on one of the 2x6 with the rim board sitting on the other 2x6. Is it still OK with you?

RE: Revised wood framing

If you are relying on toenails from the ceiling joists to the 2-2x6 to prevent them from toppling, I don't like the detail either. It could be improved by using appropriate connectors to tie the double 2x6 to the existing ceiling joists.

RE: Revised wood framing

Throw some clips on if you are concerned about the 2x6s racking.

When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.
