CSCC in vapor phase service

CSCC in vapor phase service

CSCC in vapor phase service

(OP)
Will chloride exist in the vapor phase? Usually chloride in the aqueous phase is considered for selecting a suitable material. But I heard about some study reports on this, which says about CLSCC in vapor phase. My question is whether really chloride ions can be present in Vapor phase also and it will promote CSCC?

RE: CSCC in vapor phase service

All saturated vapor streams will contain some amount of liquid ( with dissolved salts) in the form of fine mist or bigger droplets at least unless you go out of the way to eliminate this.

RE: CSCC in vapor phase service

Even if the salt partitions so that 99.9% remains in the liquid some small amount will carry over even in dry steam.
And when that steam contacts a surface that is even slightly colder a small amount of liquid will form. This cyclic wet-dry can result in very high local Cl concentrations and serious ClSCC issues.

And it is always assumed that there will be minute quantities of oxygen in the vapor phase to initiate CSCC if vapor temp exceed 55-60degC. Believe amines / alkaline pH temper CSCC effects in stainless steels.
