Welding Cast Iron

Welding Cast Iron

Welding Cast Iron

(OP)
Hi team,

Please recommend equivalent welding rod to use for weld on cast iron.
316/duplex/inconel??

RE: Welding Cast Iron

I'd use electrodes and methods described here.
http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...on-detail.a...

Note Peening is mentioned, but directly on the weld when hot to reduce shrinkage stress and risk of cracking.
The expensive nickel electrodes mentioned are stretchy compared to most steel electrodes, and thus also tend to reduce tensile stress on the brittle cast iron when cooling.

RE: Welding Cast Iron

It would help to know exactly what composition/form of cast iron you intend to weld. Is it a weld repair, or a hard-facing weld?

RE: Welding Cast Iron

Ni-Rod 44 is another good option for welding cast iron.

RE: Welding Cast Iron

Depending on what the cast iron component is used for, consider using a cast iron rod and weld it with and oxy-acetylene torch.

Best regards - Al

RE: Welding Cast Iron

If not structural (low strength use or for looks only), could he braze the broken casting?

RE: Welding Cast Iron

Yes or even metal stitch it.

RE: Welding Cast Iron

I have never been successful, with metal stitching . While several others have found the technique useful.
