Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Hello,
I'm a Phd student and i use Abaqus to simulate the rolling of a wheel on the rail. I have a really geometric of a wheel and a rail, and i simulate a sleeper like a material point and it related with a rail with a spring and damper, so in boundary condition i have the vertical translation of the rail and the wheel to simulate the dynamical behavior of wheel and rail.
in the load step a use a combined translation and rotation of the wheel, which is related with a rail by a surface to surface contact.
but after calculation i get i false results and i lose the contact of the two parts, i'm in this problems for some days a go, and until now i don't know the solution so i need your help.
and think you.

Mustapha

It's hard to realize what you're doing with that description. You should upload the model or at least some images.

RE: Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Have you activated double precision for solver execution?

Hello,
I think that i know the cause of the problem, now i try just to apply a concentrated force in the center of the wheel, and i make one step to look the behavior of the wheel without motion.
I get that the vertical displacement of the wheel oscillate, which is not normal.
What do you think the cause of this problem?

Think you.

RE: Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

I doubt you'll get any meaningful results using a coarse tetrahedral mesh mixed with a brick element model for the rail, particularly as the results are dependent on contact between the two. For a first analysis I'd have chosen an analytical rigid surface for the wheel in contact with the rail. You could then use a much refined mesh for the rail. If you want to model the wheel then use brick elements as you'll get much better results and you'll need fewer nodes to make the job run faster.

Hello,
For my last simulation, i get a best results than the last time, and you can find here a picture of my model, with the new modifications:

I use Abaqus standard, and two steps, the first for the application of the load, and the second for motion.
The difference of abaqus standard and explicit is that i get more oscillations of the wheel in explicit, and in standard not more.
Can you explain me what is the origin of this oscillations. Normally i need to get a vertical displacement of the wheel with application of the load.
And what is the modifications that i can do to get more interesting results.
Think you.

Mustapha.

RE: Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Dear Mustapha,
Did you solve your problem in ABAQUS/explicit?

RE: Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Dear All,

I am new to abaqus and want to Simulate a rolling contact of a wheel with a rail in abaqus.

Please help me and provide some .cae files, videos and tips so that I shall be able to do it.

Regards
jeetender
