Reinforced Required for Single Opening in Flat Head

Reinforced Required for Single Opening in Flat Head

Reinforced Required for Single Opening in Flat Head

(OP)
Hi,

My problem here is to determine whether the opening need to be reinforced or not.
The vessel here is 600NB shell with flat head. One single opening of 100NB pipe at center of the flat head. Flat head thickness: 50mm, Design pressure: 19 bar. Should I calculate according UG-39(b)(1)?

Tq.

RE: Reinforced Required for Single Opening in Flat Head

Yes, you need to check the reinforcement, and you may use the simple requirement of UG-39(b)(1).

RE: Reinforced Required for Single Opening in Flat Head

If this is a small part and the flat head is likely much thicker than already required (or making it thicker wouldn't impact cost significantly), one option is to apply UG-39(d). Essentially this would thicken the flat head enough such that you do not need to consider the area replacement rules.
