Bikes? Anyone else?

Bikes? Anyone else?

Bikes? Anyone else?

(OP)
I've found myself buying, refurbishing and selling bicycles as a hobby / side business.
I've loved bikes since my childhood BMX days...
Got into mountainbiking a few years ago, and built my own mountainbike up from a bare frame, but have been rescuing and refurbishing classic bikes the last couple years.
Balloon tire, BMX, Stingrays, and mountain bikes...

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

I was never much into bikes (except those with big engines attached) but our youngest son (who'll be turning 37 next month) was into BMX when he was a kid. We spent close to a grand building up a custom rig for him and considering it was in the late 80's, that was a lot of money, but he was pretty good. He raced two full seasons, 1988 and 89, but then he seriously messed-up his arm rollerblading just as the 1990 season was cranking up and he never went back to racing after it healed.

But in those two years he did pick-up a bunch of 'hardware':

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

I love bikes. I currently own 2 mountain, 1 road and 1 BMX. I have a frame designed for a 29er, but just need to get some free time to get it into steel. I think I would have more if I had the room.

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

I too loves bikes...and riding too...

Current steeds are: 2 road bikes, 3 triathlon bikes, 1 mountain bike. Next purchase is a 29'er MTN bike.

Got a bunch of carbon race wheels too. And a power meter since I am a data junkie.

I won't make a complete list, but I've got a 1950 JC Higgins Colorflow, a couple balloon tire cruisers, a Gary fisher full suspension mountainbike, and my kids have both modern mountain bikes and vintage Schwinn cruisers. Also have a couple 700C Hybrids, which are the closest thing I have to road bikes... I've been riding one of these to work pretty often.
Oh yea... Have a couple vintage Schwinn Stingrays, too.

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

All road bikes, and not a spec of carbon fiber anywhere and minimal electronics.
All steel or Al frames, nothing newer than about 1980.
I buy and sell a lot of vintage complainants.
My daily ride is all equipment from 1977. Still works like a dream.

Steel is real.

Steel is real...
Do you belong to that Facebook group???
I do have an old Schwinn Varsity also, but is is missing a lot of parts. would be a good candidate for a singlespeed conversion.

David you can buy the conversion kits as a package
http://www.ebay.com/itm/EighthInch-Deluxe-Fixed-Ge...
You can buy the black version also.

No, I am not part of the Facebook group, but I actually make high strength stainless steel tubing that gets turned into frame tubes.

I am looking for a late 70's/early 80's hand built Japanese frame (maybe a Nashiki).
It needs to be a 61 or 62cm frame. If you have a lead let me know.

I think I'd do it the poor mans way, but I'll most likely sell it as-is, and let the new owner decide what to do with it. Too many other projects.
Where are you located? I see early road bikes often around here.

Ironically, a mom I rode with on my daughters field trip mentioned she has a road bike that they want to sell. She couldn't remember if it was Japanese or German. She's going to dig it out and have me come see it.

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

How about those high end bikes with bamboo frames ???

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

Ed,
I just picked up an old Nishiki ten speed road bike. It's in pretty good shape. Needs a new tube in the front, and I think with some minor tuning it will be ridable.
I need to look up the serial number and see how old it is.
Has some really cool 3 piece cranks.
I'll let you know more details and get some pics.
You ever in Indiana?

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

I get there occasionally, and it isn't that far.
What size is it?
Does it have old Sun Tour components?

I'll get some pics and send them to you.
I picked up about 5 "new" bikes this past week, and haven't had time to really look at them closely.

Here's the Nishiki. I forgot to measure the frame, though.

RE: Bikes? Anyone else?

That is a short frame, not not top of line.
The better ones had SunTour branded cast drop outs.

Yea. It's the "Sport" model... Still has SunTour components, though... I'm 5'-11" and it fits me well.
It appears it was a well spec'd bike, compared to others in it's price range back in the day.
Just according to some of my research... I'm not a road bike guy, but enjoy learning the history of all types of bikes.
I also picked up a Schwinn World Traveler, which is a beautiful bike... Amazing condition considering where I found it.
