Piping with possible thermal expansion loop needed to pump suctions

Piping with possible thermal expansion loop needed to pump suctions

Piping with possible thermal expansion loop needed to pump suctions

(OP)
Looking from a little advice from some piping engineers regarding a modification I would like to make to save labor and materials. During construction a feed line operating at 235degF and 30psig was designed with what appears to be a small expansion loop. I would like to remove the extra run and pipe straight to the center line of the split for the two pumps it supplies. I have included two ISOs and a 3d model I put together of how I would like the pipe to run. The material will be Hastelloy C276 Sch 40 8" pipe (SB-575 UNSN10276). My biggest concern is excessive strain on the pump suction inlets. I am not a piping engineer so I would love some advice!

Gasp! A *manually drawn* iso!

These comments don't answer your question, but...

Perhaps the loop is there to avoid something/something that used to be there.

Are these all lap joint flanges? The symbology seems to indicate yes.

I hope those are not conical temporary strainers (witch's hats) downstream of the ball valves in FMP_3. If they *are*, check the length and which direction the cone is oriented and how you're going to remove it.

Should the eccentric reducer at the suction be bottom flat? Probably not.

RE: Piping with possible thermal expansion loop needed to pump suctions

The loop is there for a reason and if you are to modify the piping, you will need to have a pipe stress engineer look this over. It looks like the loop is absorbing thermal expansion of the piping from the piping outwards and from the riser above. When modifying lines like this we sometimes replace the piping or select/design the appropriate expansion joint(s) to replace the loop. Tread carefully with any modifications here. Let me know if you have other questions.

The drawing is stamped by a PE, so check with him first. If you do it yourself, you may be practicing engineering without a license.

Obtain the Allowable Forces and Moments for the pump nozzles in question and make sure they are not exceeded.
