P-No 8 WPS qualified thickness based on PWHT

P-No 8 WPS qualified thickness based on PWHT

P-No 8 WPS qualified thickness based on PWHT

(OP)
A procedure qualification was welded using A351 grade CF8 (P-No 8), cast plates 2.5 inches thick using SMAW. The PWHT was solution annealed: 2050 °F for 3 hours and water quenched. An objection was raised about the qualified thickness range (3/16 to 8 inches) entered on the WPS based upon the PQR PWHT time.

The objection stated: QW-407.2 is a supplemental essential variable when impact testing is included. The PQR PWHT time was 3 hours so the WPS would be limited to 3.75 hours maximum. If 1 hr/in of thickness is also imposed, the max base metal thickness allowed by the WPS would be 3.75" instead of 8"

However, I don't believe this to be true. QW-407.2 immediately states "see QW-407.1" and QW-407.1 (a) states in part, "For P-Numbers 1 through 6 and 9 through 15F materials..". Then going to QW-407.1 (b) it lists only two conditions: (1) no PWHT and (2) PWHT within a specified temperature range.

Applying this back to QW-407.2 indicates to me that only a change in the temperature range would require requalification and the time range does not apply to P-No 8 materials.

Bottom line: I am saying this qualifies 3/16 to 8 inches based upon QW-407.2 referring to QW-407.1 where (b) applies to temperature only.

My Question: Am I right, does the PQR qualify the procedure for a thickness range of 3/16" to 8 inches?

RE: P-No 8 WPS qualified thickness based on PWHT

Yes, with the caveat that the WPS has the PWHT (solution treatment) temperature range with hold time as qualified being 1 hour/inch of thickness, with water quench.

RE: P-No 8 WPS qualified thickness based on PWHT

Yes, metengr, that is correct the WPS PWHT is: "Heat to 1950 to 2150 °F, hold for 1 hr/inch of thickness minimum and water quench."

Thanks bunches for your rapid reply.
