Link Custom Property to Custom Property of Another Part or Assembly

Link Custom Property to Custom Property of Another Part or Assembly

(OP)
Can a SW part custom property derive its value from the custom property of another part or assembly?

I am creating an assembly that has several custom properties. I want all the components of that assembly to have the same custom properties and their values to point to the values in the assembly file. So when the assembly custom property changes, all the components custom properties change automatically.

If this is explained elsewhere, my apologies. I have searched many times for an adequate answer and, having found none, am forced to post my own inquiry...

Thanks!
Dan

RE: Link Custom Property to Custom Property of Another Part or Assembly

From what I recall, no you cannot force X parts to reference an assemblies Custom Property (CP). You can only reference items within the the part or in the assembly. However the drawing can pull those CP's from either the part or the assembly, varying if you used the same property name in both.

Have your tried using the Property Tab builder? This still will not fix your current problem, but it will make it easier to change your properties per the part or the assembly.

Hope that helps,

RE: Link Custom Property to Custom Property of Another Part or Assembly

I know of no automated way to do this. thread559-249517: How to add QTY property to each part in the assembly is the closest discussion that I can remember. While focused on getting the number of instances from an assembly into a part, some of the work-arounds may be of use to you. You might be able to get the information in a single / common place by having both documents reference a common Excel spread sheet through a design table.

I use the Property Tab Builder as Scott suggests.
It's not automated per your liking, but it possibly could be (not sure).
Per EEnd's suggestion, it may be an Excel design table.
For us, parts do not have the same properties as the assy. Parts and the associated dwgs do, assy's and the associated dwgs do, but no crossover.
