Section VIII Div. 2 - Fatigue Analysis

Section VIII Div. 2 - Fatigue Analysis

Section VIII Div. 2 - Fatigue Analysis

(OP)
During a meeting last week, one of my fellow engineers who had just returned from an ASME course on Div. 2 said that he learned that fatigue analyses are required for products built to Part 4 (by rule) as well as Part 5 (by analysis). This contradicts what another engineer and I believe to be true. I am trying to find the answer through reading my class notes and companion book but can not spot an explicit answer. Can anyone confirm or deny this for me and give reference to the the particular part of the code that discusses it.

Thanks

RE: Section VIII Div. 2 - Fatigue Analysis

See paragraph 4.1.1.4, which is a paragraph in Part 4 and references "all vessel parts designed in accordance with this Division". There is no separation of part 4 or part 5 designed vessels in this scope requirement.

Per paragraph 2.2.2.1(f), the users's design specification must include enough information to determine whether the screening criteria can exclude a fatigue analysis. However if you cannot exclude the analysis, it should be performed per paragraph 5.5.

RE: Section VIII Div. 2 - Fatigue Analysis

Fatigue analysis is not required for all Division 2 vessels. However, as marty007 indicates, all vessels as required to be evaluated with a fatigue screening (usually performed by the User and included in the UDS). That fatigue screening is in 5.5.2. There are two methods: Method A and Method B. This is generally done by the User (or the User's designated agent) in the process of defining the cyclic operating cycles.

Thank you both very much for your quick and well explained responses.
