asme b31.3-Austenitic stainless steel impact test requirements- table 323.2.2

Dear Experts
Please review the 2 code clauses which I referred below from ASME B31.3, 2014 Ed.

Clause 1:As per table 323.2.2 box A-4(a)-- if (1) Carbon > 0.1%; or (2) the material is not solution treated; then impact test has be carried out at design min.temp less than -29 degreeC except as provided in notes 3 and 6.

Clause 2: As per 323.2.2(f), Impact testing is not required for the following combinations of weld metals and design minimum temperatures:
(1) for austenitic stainless steel base materials having a carbon content not exceeding 0.10%, welded without filler metal, at design minimum temperatures of −101°C (−150°F) and higher.

Question: If I am using a austenitic material without solution treated and having Carbon content less than 0.1 at a MDMT of -30 degreeC, Am I need to do impact testing or not? Please explain.

Thanks
Rajj

Rajj,
First off the 2014 Edition is not applicable until August 27, 2015. If you are planning on welding without filler metal (Autogenously) then 323.2.2(f) will exempt you from Impact testing, however; if filler metal will be added to the weld joint, then Impact testing will be required as documented by A-4(a) as well as the weld material/ qualification (box A-4 (b).

Thank you very much. As per your explanation above "If you are planning on welding without filler metal (Autogenously) then 323.2.2(f) will exempt you from Impact testing", my weldment will be exempted from impact testing. My base metal will be exempted only if my carbon is within the limit as well as the material is solution annealed as per A-4(a). Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards
Rajj
