bolted splice in circular hollow section (CHS) steel pile foundation

(OP)
Hi all,

re: bolted splice in circular hollow section (CHS) steel pile foundation

Does anyone have any experience with using only 4 high tensile steel (Grade 10.9) studs to splice/connect two segments of a CHS steel pile together? The high tensile studs are bolted through bosses welded on the outside at the ends of the steel pile segment. That is, the length of bolts are parallel to the length of the steel pile. There are no bearing plates or end plates etc. The two separate segments are aligned at the bosses and bolted together (4xM30 Grade 10.9).

The design forces resisted by the pile are: BM = 100kNm, Shear = 50kN, Axial = 40kN.

The ground material is mainly fill.

The length of the single pile is approx. 4 metres.

The outside diameter of the CHS is 610mm.

The wall thickness of the CHS is 16mm.

Many thanks!
