no internet NX

no internet NX

(OP)
is there NX (after NX6) to buy that can run with no internet available?
Thanks

RE: no internet NX

I'm fairly certain every version of NX will run without the internet (provided you've already got the relevant license file etc from Siemens). :)

I just upgraded from NX4 to NX10 and it seems just fine. :)

RE: no internet NX

(OP)
can the license file be E-Mailed and just copy to already installed UG (UG on CD is OK with me).
After that is annual payment, or all at once (by my choice)? Am I correct?

RE: no internet NX

Well, when you order a license of NX, i think that you must have a network adapter to lock the license against. I don't think that one can lock the license against a "dongle" anymore.
- You will need to provide Siemens a "Composite Host ID" which is a mixture of your network address and some other hardware component identities. ( supposed to be a unique ID for the respective computer.)

When the license server ( the license service) is installed, the network adapter needs to respond to the licence service but you need no network out from the computer. - I think that the adapter therefore must be running.

The license service and NX checks each other "now and then" in so called heartbeats , NX allows a number of lost heartbeats without problems. For example i regularly move my laptop , with a NX session up, without network connection, from my desk to some conference room. Siemens does not say how often these heartbeats occur or how many lost heartbeats if tolerates. That would bee too easy for a potential hacker.

I think that i thereby answered also your second question.

When you buy NX, you either buy with or without maintenance ( there might be other options as well)
with maintenance you pay a monthly fee, you can report problems, get help from GTAC, download updates and new versions of NX.
Without i think you can download updates to the "Bought" release" but there is no help from GTAC nor new versions.

Tomas

As I understand I can run NX just for a short time without connection to internet. I need it (NX) to be on computer which never will be connected to internet.

RE: no internet NX

I don't think you need internet access, just a connection to your license server.

Did you need any connection to internet (for a long time span, say a year), working or installing NX10?

RE: no internet NX

(OP)
Cowski,
but then the server has to be connected to internet. I am looking for NX in one small company, no server, no internet, just one laptop. Can I pay for NX and get CD plus license file (emailed license file is fine). Will I need to renew my license file ever again? I do not need helps (maintenance) or newer versions.

RE: no internet NX

Sounds like you should be having this conversation with GTAC.

Do you have a maintenance agreement?

looks like GTAC is an answer. Thanks
I never used help, and I do not know to which extend is license in the company where I work NOW.

RE: no internet NX

NikonF6,

You do not need an internet connection to run NX10. You will be able to run it perfectly fine WITH OUT a connection to the internet for as long as you wish. As long as you have the capability to get your license file first (of course) so that you can then install it on the computer you wish to use it on.

The Hardware Key is still an option (i have just got that version myself and it doesnt require a license server to run, just the license file and hardware key).

Hope that helps. :)

RE: no internet NX

But you still have to have a legitimate licence file from Siemens PLM Software. Once you have PAID for a license, it's yours, for life. But it can only be installed on the system you licensed it for (there is the hardware key option but still they only gets you one seat of NX). It sounds like like you're trying to use, for your own use on something like a laptop, one of the licenses currently owned by your employer. That's not how it works. Granted, there are ways to temporarily 'borrow' a license for one seat of NX from the license server to a laptop that will be used off the network but that license will only work for an explicit period of time as specified at the time the 'borrowing' takes place, then it will die.

RE: no internet NX

(OP)
No, it does nothing with my current employer.
The intention is to run my own company (later on). I need only one seat license, and no internet will be ever connected to UG computer. No upgrade to latest version will be in need.
Is it possible to get earlier version (7.5 or 8, not R10)?

RE: no internet NX

You would have have to talk directly with your Siemens PLM representative or the distributor/partner that you're currently dealing with. We do not sell NX, except the student versions, direct over the net.

RE: no internet NX

yes. The supported versions can be downloaded. I am pretty sure that even older versions can be found with some work. John probably has the install for V11.1 hidden somewhere smile

RE: no internet NX

While you can download older versions of NX from the GTAC support site, without a valid license file, it will do you no good. Also, you will need a WebKey ID to even log into the GTAC support site and you can only get one of those if and when you sign a license agreement with Siemens PLM Software.

RE: no internet NX

But as for the fundamental question about installing and running NX without being connected to any network?

Yes. QED. I'm in this mode several times a month on my laptop.

You can buy a license, install the FlexLM license server locally, install NX locally, and run with zero connection to the internet (which I do all the time while traveling and/or presenting at conferences) and NX runs like a champ.

...and does so quite quickly, if it doesn't need to access anything remotely (licenses, files, databases, etc.)

Hope that helps.

RE: no internet NX

NikonF6,

You need a node locked license. I have one on my laptop and can run without an internet connection, or being connected to a network. What was mentioned previously is correct, your NX installation will generate a Composite Host ID. GTAC will use this ID to send you an active license. If you buy NX right now, you can go and download the the current version and a few of the previous versions. You can install them and run them together. Currently I am running 7.5 and 9. A while back I ran 2, 4, and 6 at the same time. One note: If you do not pay maintenance and your hard drive crashes, you lose your laptop, your network card gets fried, whatever the case may be. . . GTAC will charge a license transfer fee. I can't remember how much it is. I want to say it was around $1000. Your composite host ID is the result of some algorithm ran against the physical device IDs of the network card and hard drive.
