HDG fasteners on bare steel - Buffer?

HDG fasteners on bare steel - Buffer?

HDG fasteners on bare steel - Buffer?

(OP)
Due to galvanic corrosion I'm aware that HDG bolts attaching bare metal beams-to-columns is a no-no. I have primed beams/columns fastened with black bolts. Obviously the bolts tend to start rusting/streaking prior to the primed material in an exterior environment. Are there reasonable "buffers" out there that would allow me to use a HDG fastener with a primed steel plate connections? Even if there is a buffer, what about where the bolt/plate bearing occurs? I'm just trying to learn what others have done in similar situations. HDG'ing the beams and columns isn't an option unfortunately. Would it make sense to prime what is exposed of the completed connection?

Thanks.

what about stainless bolts?

Yikes. Cost I presume. Any less expensive solutions?

I think it depends on what type primer you are talking about. If the steel has an inorganic zinc primer, the HDG bolts should be fine. If a lesser primer is used, you may be best to stick with black bolts.

Good point. I'll check into the primer issue. Thanks.

RE: HDG fasteners on bare steel - Buffer?

I wonder if there is a type grease you could put on the shank and then use stainless washers?

RE: HDG fasteners on bare steel - Buffer?

Why should there be a prohibition in using HDG bolts? The zinc will sacrifice itself faster due to there being, in effect, a larger cathode that the zinc needs to protect. But there will still be some protection for the bolts.

It for sure wouldn't be worse than black bolts.
