Open Trellis Patio

Open Trellis Patio

Open Trellis Patio

I have an open patio design, just a basic trellis. Problem is I'm in Seismic Design Category 'E' where knee braces are not allowed. Anyone have ideas how to get around this?

RE: Open Trellis Patio

Some may disagree. To avoid the restrictions on structural systems in chapter 12 of ASCE 7, I have considered canopies to be non-building structures and used the provisions in chapter 15. But, these have been steel structures.

RE: Open Trellis Patio

I generally do the same as WannabeSE. Typically designed as cantilever column system with R=1.25. The seismic forces are generally manageable as the weight is so low.

RE: Open Trellis Patio

I agree with jdengineer. With such relatively low seismic weight, I would try to get away with the cantilevered column system.

A cantilevered system with wood posts? A fixed base detail for a wood post at the foundation might get a little tricky. Or would I just bump it up to steel (way more expensive)? Thanks for the replies.

RE: Open Trellis Patio

embed the posts and use ASAE EP486 to design them.

RE: Open Trellis Patio

Use automotive shock absorbers for the knee braces and call it a damped system. You could wrap the shocks to look like wood.

RE: Open Trellis Patio

Treat the bottom of the columns with creosote and embedded in the concrete footing??
