Equipment Material Selection Requirements

Equipment Material Selection Requirements

Equipment Material Selection Requirements

(OP)
I have to build a material selection work instruction for a petroleum company.

The philosophy is this work instruction is that we have to select the material of a specific equipment(pipeline, pipe, pump, valve, pressure vessel...) knowing the operating conditions of this equipment (temperature, pressure, fluid contents...): what is the appropriate material to select?

I have read the material selection NORSOK M-001 but I didn't find a lot of details about what I am looking for.

I would like to know if there is other references and documents treating this topic in detail?

Regards,

RE: Equipment Material Selection Requirements

Not to sound trite, but do you have 40 years in the business?
Major oil companies have these guides, and they really are not very long, until you get to the rules and exceptions and special cases.
This is very involved.
I suggest that you start with a list of all of the equipment that you are wanting to work with. Then you need to work on various services for each, next would be what you currently use (along with design codes and construction and testing rules).
Then you can start thinking about possible alternates.
This is a career long task.

I am sorry for the orthograph faults.
I am new in the petroleum field and this is a challenge that I have to achieve. I have searched a lot but I didn't found specific documentation about those recommendations.

RE: Equipment Material Selection Requirements

ChihebG, try the BS EN ISO 21457 : Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries — Materials selection and corrosion control for oil and gas production systems. This standard gives materials options/recommendations for various services. Use it with discretion!

RE: Equipment Material Selection Requirements

You might be able to manage a procedural guide. If you do produce a 'work instruction,' patent it because you will be the first to do so. ISO 21457 is, essentially, NORSOK M-001 put into an ISO document template and is thus strongly geared towards offshore hydrocarbon production. You will not get the details that you are seeking because materials selection is a business process that varies substantially, not only from company to company, but from project to project within a single company.
