Welding Procedure for SA 724 Gr.C

Welding Procedure for SA 724 Gr.C

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

I would like to ask assistance on developing WPS for butt welding of SA 724 Gr.C plate 38mm thick using FCAW Process. Are there any resources you can give to study the welding and cutting process and essential/critical variables to be considered?

Thanks

RE: Welding Procedure for SA 724 Gr.C

This material is a high strength (90-110 Ksi), quenched and tempered, Mn-Si carbon steel pressure vessel plate. As such, two critical welding parameters, besides preheat based on Section VIII, Div 1 recommendations, will be to use lower heat input and keep the interpass temperature below 650 deg F to avoid adding too much heat and altering the bulk mechanical properties away from the weld region. Grade C is a P-No. 1 base material. Use low hydrogen consumables and if NDT is required, delay by 48 hours to ensure no hydrogen cracking.

If required, post weld heat treatment should be performed at least 50 deg F below the original tempering temperature (1150 deg F minimum by the material specification).

The weld wire for FCAW should match the strength level of the plate.
