The question has arisen because the particular corrosive environment places special demands on carbon steel chemistry.

I'm wondering if anyone has actual data on carbon content of the GTAW root pass (assume ER70S-2 on A106B, 2~6" diameter, typical prep and WPS) they can share.

Good practice is to assume 30% dilution of the deposited weld metal with the base material. I would expect that carbon content will increase from about 0.04%-0.05% of the filler metal to approximately 0.07% or 0.08% in the root pass depending on the carbon content of the A-106 B.
