Cold Rolling SA387 Gr.91 Plate

Cold Rolling SA387 Gr.91 Plate

Cold Rolling SA387 Gr.91 Plate

(OP)
Hi,

Does anyone know of any precautions needed for cold rolling Grade 91 Chromoly plate.

The plate will be 3/8" thick and rolled to form a cone with a small diameter of approx. 10" and approx. 20 inches long.

I will PWHT the long seam as normal.

Please note, this cone will not be part of the pressure bearing wall.

Thanks

Do you have the load capacity to cold roll this material into a cone? Keep in mind this is high strength plate material. After rolling, I would perform a stress relief treatment, similar to PWHT, to remove forming strains.

Thanks metengr,

As always, you reply with great sense.

I have just read ASME Sec. 1, PG-20. I am going to study this a bit more and will make my decision based on this.

Thanks Again.

RE: Cold Rolling SA387 Gr.91 Plate

Do your weld prep of the two edges (the butt weld joint) before rolling.

If you're going to make a bunch of these, several grinding companies have hand-operated edge bevelers that will save a lot of time over hand-grinding.

This appears to be a pretty tight bend, inducing strain > 5%. The whole cone should be furnace stress relieved per metengr. It could be done after long seam welding.
