abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

(OP)
Hello,
I have a part meshed and solved for residual stresses.
I d like to delete a layer of mesh to simulate material removal but keep the remaining residual stress values.
What should i do step by step?
Thanks in advance.

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

You can remove elements with *Model Change, but you cannot enforce that the stresses stay the same. That depends on the situation (your boundary conditions, i.e.) and is calculated by the solver.

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

Could you use a predefined stress state?

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

(OP)
Actually, I don't want to enforce stresses stay the same.
What i want is to get what remaining residual stresses are after material removal.
I will use that phase of the mesh with pretension applied and material removed for new loading conditions.
Thanks.

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

Have you considered using some erosion/damage initiation modelling?

Have a look at the following link where they have an eroding projectile hitting an eroding plate.

Eroding projectile impacting eroding plate

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

(OP)
No this is not like eroding plate or chip removal problem.
Yes i want to simulate chip removed (like machined) by using mesh layer (same size with removed chip) deleted and get the remaining stress state.

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

Sorry but you're not making much sense.

It is not a chip removal problem but it is?

RE: abaqus material removal by using mesh deletion

As you know, there is tool chip removal problems solved. These are damage problems and i dont want to solve that problem as a damage one. I will try *Model change to deactivate some layers of mesh for the next loading step. I hope it will be satisfactory.
Thanks for your interest.
