1 M height painting requirement
1 M height painting requirement
(OP)
Good afternoon Gents,
I always arguing with the painting subcontractor about this issue.
I suggested to them not to make square edge (Sketch-A) at the 1 M point. Making little bit slope (Sketch-B)
If the edge is square the painting there is tendency to peel off.
Please refer to sketch A and B in the attachment.
Any other advise is highly appreciated.

RE: 1 M height painting requirement
It is Coaltar Epoxy 400 micron DFT.
IRstuff,
We are not arguing about scope work. It is clear the subcontractor scope to paint with 400 dft Coaltar Epoxy only 1 M height.
The question is the edge at 1 M must be square like sketch A or slope like sketch B.
The painting subcontractor put masking tape exactly at 1 M. After painting completed they remove the tape. Looks nice and tidy like sketch A.
But in my opinion there is tendency peel of on the top edge because the top edge is square. That is why I asked them to make it slope like sketch B.
RE: 1 M height painting requirement
My other question is : is it just this area which will be painted with this product? Are other nearby areas will be painted with other specification ?.
If only that area to take that picture and the tank will be filled at higher altitudes dont worry about it only when you withdraw the tape be careful .
regards,

RE: 1 M height painting requirement
Thanks for the advice.
Figueredo,
The surface preparation is SSPS SP10.
Only bottom plate and 1 M shell plate will be coated by coaltar epoxy. The rest is bare metal.
Yes during operation the product in the tank would be above 1 M except during maintenance which will be after 5 or 10 years.
IRstuff,
The project specs and the subcontractor procedure do not cover that detail.
I understand this shall be cleared during kick of meeting or when the procedure was being reviewed. But somehow the procedure had been approved by the higher level who looks like has very less experience in painting.
After further hard discussion the subcontractor agree with my suggestion because they do not need to apply a masking tape and remove again after painting work is completed.
Since this is internal painting there is no issue about appearance.
RE: 1 M height painting requirement
I also agree with IRstuff that you are increasing the scope of work of the painting contractor, thus expect a change order for cost increase.
RE: 1 M height painting requirement
Practically it is not really slope like sketch B.
So there is no additional effort or cost. But there is no more man-hour for putting and removing the slop.
