Parasolid export

Parasolid export

(OP)
Hey guys..

Short question about exporting and importing of parasolids.

When I export a Parasolid from NX8.5.3., after that I import it again in NX (same version) I get the below result in part navigator.

Now when I double click (edit) the feature I get below message.

Which implies that somehow there is feature information to be retrieved and capable of editing...how can I accomplish this?

Error message is as follows.

Quote (NX 8.5.3)

Feature level update from the source Parasolid file is not currently supported. No updating of Parasolid files is currently allowed

RE: Parasolid export

Despite what the 'Information' message might imply, there is NO feature data nor any parent/child relationships which the user can edit or for that matter that NX is even maintaining. Perhaps we should come-up with a better wording so as to be more clear as to exactly what is or is not happening here. But the bottom line is that you're not doing anything wrong, there's no setting that you missed or anything else, it's just a poorly worded message.

RE: Parasolid export

What the message is saying (I suppose) is that the body is a "Parasolid File Import" feature. In other words, you have a body whose parent is the Parasolid file. I think NX lets you import point files in roughly the same way, and this gives you a "feature" that you *can* edit -- you can replace the point file by a new/different one. The error message is saying that Parasolid import does not yet have this editing capability. It's not talking about a feature tree inside the Parasolid file -- there ain't no such thang; Parasolid knows (almost) nothing about parent-child relationships.

RE: Parasolid export

Please, that is NOT an 'error' message! It'a an 'Informational' message, hence the BIG letter ' (i) '. If it were an 'error' it would have a BIG ' (X) '.

And please do NOT read too much into the wording of the message as I've already stated that it's poorly worded and does mean what you might think it does.

Hi John..Thanks a lot for the clarification....

The problem is actually that we are moving to NX9 pretty soon from now. However some of our Licensees are staying on NX8.5 (or switching from 7.5 to 8.5) and we need to come up with a solid way (pun intended) to exchange our NX9 data with their earlier versions..

So probably Step would be our best bet, just need to come up with a solution for the drawings...

RE: Parasolid export

No, there is NOTHING wrong with using Parasolid to exchange model data between newer versions of NX and older versions. In fact, it's the preferred method for doing this if the only need is to move the topological solid or sheet bodies. All I'm saying is that there is NO 'Error' in what you're doing but rather you're simply being told, via an 'Informational' message, that there is not the possibility to edit the Parasolid body as if it were a normal NX feature. In fact, you can avoid ever getting these messages altogether if you had copied your Parasolid bodies into an existing, but empty, NX part file using the...

File -> Import -> Parasolid...

...workflow rather then opening the Parasolid files directly using File -> Open...

Granted, we support both approaches, but in your case, perhaps the way I've proposed above would serve you better in the long run. And before you ask, nothing has changed in NX 9.0 or NX 10.0 with respect to these two alternative methods for moving Parsolid data from newer versions of NX to an older version.

RE: Parasolid export

If you would run NX and Solid Edge "in Pair", then the double click will have the option to update to a later version of the body, with kept downstream associativity.
Say that you design your parts in SE and use NX for Simulation, CAM etc, then you can "replace" the SE body and keep the work done in NX.

( Browse the Solid edge threads for a sample model to test...smile

Tomas
