We are forging. Customer requested a change from 2219-T62 to 2219-T6.

What's the difference, if any. What should I look out for in process?

Any heat treat information they look to be identical, I am not very experienced with Aluminum.

There is a difference between the two temper designations for 2219 regarding precipitation treatment time at temperature. I would suggest you review ASM Handbook, Volume 4, Heat Treating of Aluminum Alloys to determine the heat treatment conditions for the various product forms. Both T6 and T62 temper designations are listed.

The Aluminum Association handbook does not show a T62 condition for 2219 forgings. T62 is for sheet, plate and extrusions. T6 is for die forgings and rolled rings. After solution treating and natural ageing, you end up with T4. Ageing the T4 condition at 375F for 26 hours results in the T6 condition. There is also a T852 designation for hand forgings. This comes from taking solution treated material and giving it a 1-5% cold reduction prior to ageing at 350F for 18 hours.

Our Heat treater explained it as such "T6 for this alloy is aged @ 375 deg F 26hrs, T62 is 36hrs"
