Ice Rink Design

Ice Rink Design

(OP)
I have a client who asked me to prepare the MEP construction document for an ice rink. I would like to know what the main design requirements are, especially on mechanical side- such as codes, standards, etc. Does the mechanical engineer usually design the ice rink itself or is a third party company would take care of that? Any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Ice Rink Design

Find an Engineer who has done a rink and pay his consulting fee.

RE: Ice Rink Design

Ask you AHJ for special code requirements.

RE: Ice Rink Design

As a mechanical engineer you will be responsible for the design / sizing of the refrigeration plant and the air conditioning and ventilation inside the ice rink area.

RE: Ice Rink Design

I would sub out the rink ice refrigeration part as it is a specialty, and just deal with the HVAC in house. Humidity is a big deal.

ASHRAE 2004 Application Ch 4 Places of Assembly has an ice rink section that will help with where to look and getting the design started.
