Nominal Size

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

1.094" x 25.4 mm/in. = 27.889 mm. nom. thickness

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

Can't say that I'd agree with the wall thickness example. Nominal wall thickness in my book would be something more like 1"

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

How many passes for a 1" thick wall butt weld and what kind of pressure would this be for?

Piping Design Central

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

zdr1985 is right, the thickness got nothing to do with it(is behind the comma).

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

NS is the industry convention for naming pipe. Six inch nominal size pipe corresponds to pipe with an approximate inner diameter of six inches. The actual inner diameter varies based on the wall thickness of the pipe.

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

The nominal size and thickness both in inches should be enough, why mix up with redundant dimensions with mm if using English units?

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

And when ordered on the continent leave the redundant inches.

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

Nominal Size of pipe diameter, 6" NS = 6.625" OD = 168.3 mm OD.

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

When referring to pipe I am actually more accustomed to seeing NPS for Nominal Pipe Size, but given the material description above, it's obvious the author does mean nominal size.

RE: what does "NS" mean in component description in MTO?

I think I may have seen some standards use the abbreviation"NS" for nominal size; however, it's probably best in general to not use abbreviations or acronyms that are not defined in the document, or well known. Notice the discussion by the "http://www.hfw.com/Legal-Eagles-18-September-2014, with the warning, "Any party who intends to rely solely on abbreviations to a certain extent becomes a hostage to fortune."
