Thermal movement of below grade garage

Thermal movement of below grade garage

Thermal movement of below grade garage

(OP)
To calculate the expected movements of the expansion joint, I am trying to calculate the thermal movement of a new unheated below-grade reinforced concrete (non-prestressed) garage with walls all sides. The top level is at grade and subject to direct sun and is covered with 3" asphalt over protection board over waterproofing membrane.

QUESTIONS:

1) For southern Ontario, what temperature range should I take for the top slab, and for the lower floor slabs, and for the perimeter earth retaining walls? (I realize that the top slab will be colder in the winter due to radiation to the night sky, and warmer in summer due to solar radiation, than the lower floors).

2) Given that the perimeter walls are probably going to have a lesser temperature range than any of the floors, how will this affect the expansion joint movements? Do I have to do a 3 dimensional model of the garage to assess this?

I realize that the expansion joint seal manufacturers can probably suggest movement numbers, perhaps based on experience, but they won't accept responsibility for that, so I would like to do at least an approximate check.

Maybe I can answer one of my own questions: I see that a map in the CPCI Handbook gives temperature range of 35 Celsius degrees (95 Fahrenheit degrees) for Toronto area. But I would still be interested in any answers or comments on my remaining questions.
