BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

(OP)
Can anyone tell me what paragraph in the code states that x-ray or UT must be performed after stress relieving of the weld? I know all about why doing it before and after is beneficial so I don't need a lesson on Hydrogen trapping or stresses, I need to know where exactly in the code it calls out for a second NDE after the relieving.

RE: BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

What is the code ?

RE: BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

This question has come up time and time again. The "code" (ASME B&PV Code) is only concerned that NDT is performed when the weld is completed (sequencing is not addressed). ASME B31.1 piping code, has a slightly different view where for certain materials, NDT is required after PWHT.

RE: BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

Do you have a copy of the code you are working to ?
Still no idea of what code you are working to but here is B31.3

341.3 Examination Requirements
341.3.1 General. Prior to initial operation each piping
installation, including components and workmanship,
shall be examined in accordance with the
applicable requirements of para. 341. The type and
extent of any additional examination required by the
engineering design, and the acceptance criteria to be
applied, shall be specified. Joints not included in examinations
required by para. 341.4 or by the engineering
design are accepted if they pass the leak test required
by para. 345.
(a) For P-Nos. 3, 4, and 5 materials, examination shall
be performed after completion of any heat treatmen

Section 8 Div 2
Boiler vessel
Material is F-11, P-4, 2.75" wall thickness nozzle to shell

RE: BPVC CODE X-RAY/SHEAR WAVE AFTER STRESS

Sect VIII does not specify when; before or after. Cautious engineers & clients spec a post-PWHT UT shearwave scan 'just in case', but it is not a Code requirement for vessels. And that is why you cannot find it in Sect VIII. And why folks are telling you that it needs to be done. Personally, I spec it.

Have a look at AF-223.2
