CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

(OP)
Check valve(which is spring loaded) mounted on an automotive component is supposed to open above some rated pressure.

I have test data on check valve. Cracking pressure and flow rate through the check valve at different line pressure is observed. Different line pressure in test is simulated through throttle valve closing.
With CFD I would like to correlate the test data and flow rate through the check valve corresponding to different line pressure. I have tried STATIC analysis with different boundary configuration with no luck.

Do I need to run transient analysis? Static should never be used in this case (spring valve)?

RE: CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

Why don't you get this information from the manufacturer. It would be easier.

RE: CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

I don't see what you are trying to find here. Are you looking to find a Cv value at percentage of check valve opening? Are you trying to find a flow rate at a given pressure? Are you trying to create a CFD model that matches real world test results? From what I can tell is that you have test data on the valve showing flow rate Vs line pressure. Describing your valve as spring loaded is not very descriptive; most check valves are spring loaded. What type of check valve is it dart, disk, etc?

Yes I am trying to correlate test results(flow rate through check valve with line pressure) with CFD. Check valve is not standard valve available in market, we are trying to design the valve in house to fit it over an automotive fuel line component. Since its not standard its neither dart,disk.. but I can show you roughly cross section (attached sketch). If in spring loaded valve there is going to be pulsation of valve I believe I need to perform transient CFD? Or Static CFD would never work in this case? I don't have much idea.

RE: CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

It appears to be basically an unguided plate/poppet type check valve. Absent some damping, it will make a buzzing noise at low flows. ... like any undamped pressure control valve will.

The first mistake you have probably already made in your model is assuming that the helical compression spring force is developed along the spring's axis of symmetry.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the valve design may be wrong (undamped control valve,.. But test result seems to be fine. Now I need to correlate test results with CFD.

RE: CFD on check valve (spring loaded)

The paper cited by bimr should lead you to the correct boundary conditions required for your CFD analysis.
