ASME Sec. IX Duplex Stainless Steel weld qualification

All,

I recently had a job come up that is SA-790 Duplex Stainless steel. In the past years we qualified a procedure where the customer required impact testing where the minimum thickness qualified was 5/8". The current job i have has thicknesses ranging from .280" to .375". with the supplementary requirements needed for impact testing the 2013 code states that you can only put fillet welds on the minimum thickness qualified. My question is can i rewrite another PQR leaving out the impact testing done from the lab and not have to comply with the supplementary requirements of the ASME code and have a groove weld qualify fillet welds on all thicknesses and diameters? Your replies are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christian

RE: ASME Sec. IX Duplex Stainless Steel weld qualification

If the new piping to be welded does not require impact testing, your WPS qualified on 5/8" material permits making groove and fillet welds in the new thickness range defined.

and you can NEVER revise a PQR [yes, there are a few very technical exceptions] -- that PQR is the report of the welding of your coupon. That cannot change w/o another weld.
BUT, you can write many WPS's from one PQR. Write a non-Impact WPS for the usual "2T" thickness, and 'unlimited' fillet size. Simple.
