Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

(OP)
Is it possible to design a pressure vessel by using material not listed in ASME SEC VIII-1.If Yes then how?

RE: Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

Baqar110, short answer, you can design pressure vessels according to any relevant Code using any material you like, given detailed knowledge of the mechanical properties. You can't stamp it, no user is obligated to accept it.

Why not use listed material?

Regards,

MIke

RE: Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

Yes, and as SnTMan correctly stated it will not be stamped as a pressure vessel.

RE: Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

Baqar110, the answer I should have given is: See UG-10 for basis for using non-listed materials. Also various Code Cases permit use of some non-listed materials. This might be kind of laborious for you to research.

Still.... Most listed materials are widely available. I'd use 'em unless it is REALLY worth the trouble.

Regards,

Mike

RE: Material under ASME SEC VIII-1

Non listed materials can not be used in construction of ASME vessels. You worth the effort you can send an inquire to the ASME committee for approval and hopefully gets approved. Now UG10 does not allow use of none listed materials, it allows to merely clarify ASTM materiàls if in fact its an exact match. Also may allow materials through lab testing if the specification is known.
