RE: Goliath Foundation

I had no idea what a "Goliath" was. Doing some googling around, my best guess is a gantry crane similar to these:
http://www.konecranes.com/equipment/shipyard-crane...

In that case, the manufacturer might have some helpful literature on the requirements for foundations?

And if that's not what you're talking about, more information would be helpful.

Yes. But the manufacturers are giving some typical sketch and washing the hands.
It should be a continuous footing.

RE: Goliath Foundation

They should be able to give you the maximum dead and live load reactions. The wind and seismic would be up to you for the location of the crane.

Just stay away from young boys with slings and you will be fine

RE: Goliath Foundation

Hi msboobathi,

I'm dealing with same structure also, gantry cranes, overhead cranes, jib etc. and just want to know how do you analyze and design non-prismatic box steel section which is the most common members of gantry crane? Do you have any personal spreadsheet that is able to check non prismatic steel section for bending, shear, torsion and deflection requirements? what software are you using?

Thank you in advance and i hope to have far discussion with you with same issue.

Regards,
Neukcm

Above ground, gantry crane foundations may all look alike. Below ground, they can be very different. Crane foundations usually have very strict requirements for differential settlement. Suggest that you start by having a geotechnical engineer investigate the soils and make substructure foundation recommendations. Piling may be required if the soils are poor; in good soils maybe not. The necessary geotechnical information will guide how the remainder of the foundation may be designed.
