Pipe Support Freestanding Column

Pipe Support Freestanding Column

(OP)
Ok so here goes

When we use staad it automatically sets the column as k=1, so i change it to 2.1, however I've heard of some engineers using the pipe as a lateral brace assuming that there would be some kind of translation fixidity, but theres an issue with that. You can't assume full fixidity, theres no way. How are you guys setting this up?

RE: Pipe Support Freestanding Column

It's entirely possible that the pipe, or the pipe rack , may be able to restrain the tops of your columns. However, I think that a K=2 sway column design is a prudent default position until you've evaluated the potential for lateral restraint explicitly. AISC provides strength and stiffness evaluation procedures for bracing. This should be the litmus test for whether or not you consider the tops of your columns braced.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
