The inline pinout of the HD44780 is straight forward for a rigid mount but if you want to remote mount one of these, how do I keep the costs down in the pennies? I think a header mounting to the PCB will be pretty simple as it is pretty open to any design but how would you convert the pinout on the LCD to a type of ribbon or similar style?

Note: I am NOT married to the HD44780 but they are the most affordable we can find right now. Would be very open to another option with header already mounted or even a smaller LCD!! Looking at an LCD that is half that size is about 10x the price! We mostly just source through the big box online stores though. Maybe something else out there we are unaware of?

Can you use 2x8? I use it a lot for savings and space.
