Static Mixer Alternative?

Static Mixer Alternative?

Static Mixer Alternative?

(OP)
Is there a static tubing apparatus that stirs/rotates liquids internally within the tubing?

Looking for something along the lines of a static mixer but instead of mixing miscible liquids it will create a rotational/stirring movement. The objective is to create stirring among the liquid and avoid agitation or turbulence that would change the chemical composition. This is important because it will be used for beverage consumption purposes and a change in the chemical composition could alter the taste or texture

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

A static mixer comprises a long stack of short helical blades of alternating hand within a pipe. You could just twist a long strip into one long continuous helix of arbitrary hand. Whether it would do what you expect it to is hard to guess, but it's no big deal to build such a thing and try it.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

I have seen something like this in the hardware stores. Some sealing materials have this at the end of the tube. When you pull the handle on the caulking gun it forces the 2 part grout through the tube. Also sewer grout pumps do the same thing. 2 hoses are attached to pumps At the nozzle the 2 materials are put into a single tube and mixed by a flowing through a screw type of apparatus.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

You didn't provide much information to go on, but if your flow rates are adequate then I've found excellent mixing with minimal shear in low-velocity eductors. In this scenario, you pump the dominant fluid into an eductor that sucks on the secondary fluid(s) and they mix in the exhaust throat. This is how a hose-end sprayer works to apply chemicals to your yard.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

Don't think it is possible with miscible liquids. After 4 turns or so, most liquids will be blended. You would have to modify the liquid properties to make this work.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

Why not? "Miscible" means "(of liquids) forming a homogeneous mixture when added together." This is not an uncommon technique at all (often saves the cost and maintenance of the second pump).

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

Mo mixer is needed, just 4 turns of the tubing.

Any kind of static mixer, educator, etc. will impart more energy than what the OP is asking.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

Here are some ideas:

Statiflo DesalMixer:

This unit is probably not available for small tubing.

Microgroove:

Copper pipe with internal grooves. Probably would work, but only available in aluminum or copper.

Corrugated tubing:

Probably the most practical and readily available.

RE: Static Mixer Alternative?

Because of the nature of the no-flow boundary, swirling profiles on the ID of the pipe tend to not impart angular velocity on a flow stream. I've seen this tried dozens of times with various correlation geometries and none have ever created a real-life swirling flow pattern.
