API Tank adequacy check for next 20 years

API Tank adequacy check for next 20 years

(OP)
Hi All,

I have received a request from client to asses existing tank and prepared adequacy check report for next 20 years of service.
http://www.eng-tips.com/
I understand API653 and API579 codes to be followed for the assessment.

Anybody have experience in these codes? When to use API653 and when to use API579 ?

Kindly through some light on differences between these two API codes ?

Best regards

RE: API Tank adequacy check for next 20 years

API 653 covers the inspector certification requirements to be able to inspect a tank. You will have to employ someone who is API 653 certified if you have to include that certification in your report.

The American Petroleum Institute initiated an Above Ground Storage Tank Inspector Certification Program with the issuance of Supplement 1 to API 653, Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction. The program was developed with the participation storage tank owner/users, and establishes a uniform national program that will assist state and local governments in above ground storage tank regulations.

The API 579 Fitness-for-Service Standard assessments are quantitative engineering evaluations that are performed to demonstrate the structural integrity of an in-service component containing a flaw or damage.

Whether or not API 579 is applicable depends on what type of "tank" that you are inspecting.
