Explaining error messages

Explaining error messages

(OP)
Hello,
Is there a good source or 'dictionary' if you will that
explains error messages? It would be nice to know why I
have been slapped on the wrist and told 'that won't work'.
Seriously though, some errors messages are obvious. But some leave me wondering what I did wrong and what must I do
differently to get an operation to work.
This question is general in nature, but if there is
an explanation of error messages, it would be helpful.
                          Thanks........... lookn4cloud9.
