Calculation method for Substation bus structure due to short circuit currents

Calculation method for Substation bus structure due to short circuit currents

(OP)
Hello,

I would like to learn the basis of calculation principles when it comes to design of substation bus structures. In particular, when it comes to the forces (kN) applies to the steel structure, equipment, cables with the respect to forces due to short circuit currents. Structural engineer will very likely omit this factor unless these horizontal forces (phase to phase) comes from the electrical. Having said, the known data is short circuit current and time, voltages, phase-to-phase spacing and clearnance from the ground. What is correct method to calculate kN factor due to short circuit current.

thank you.

"Structural engineer will very likely omit this factor" Not in my experience.

RE: Calculation method for Substation bus structure due to short circuit currents

As a starting point try the to get the following standards:

1- 605-1987 - IEEE Guide for Design of Substation Rigid-Bus Structures
2- IEC Std. 60865

In our experience the insulators are most likely the weakest point to be checked.
The electrical discipline should provide the layout of the bus support to let structural to calculate the steel structural, foundation and anchor bolts.
The SC forces acting perpendicular to the busses should be considered by structural for the total loading combinations require to design the system.

I hope this help
