Combined Shear/Uplift Wood Panels

Combined Shear/Uplift Wood Panels

Combined Shear/Uplift Wood Panels

(OP)
Slightly confused about the terminology in SDPWS regarding shear wall panels that are subjected to combined tension and shear. Note 4.4.2.1 (2008 version) states that the panels should be installed with the strength axis oriented parallel to the studs. I think of this similar to a floor system in which the 4' dimension lands on the joists or in this case the 4' dimension lands on the studs. However, Figures 4G-4I show panels being installed with the 8' dimension landing on the studs.

My project has 16' walls, so if the panels can be installed vertically 1 row of blocking would be required instead of 3 rows. If three rows are required, strapping may be the more economical solution.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Maybe I am missing something.
