general consensus drilling question

general consensus drilling question

general consensus drilling question

(OP)
this question is to be directed towards the machining population.

when it comes to drilling and holemaking in general, which company or companies stand out?

thanks

RE: general consensus drilling question

osg drills are the best i have ever used.

try  www.osgtool.com  for more info. guhring are also very good drills.

RE: general consensus drilling question

PTD has worked very well for me primarily due to the technical support we receive from the area rep.  Really it all depends on the material and application as to who has the best solution.  I have used Kennametal SE drills and they work great, just a little more expensive.  OSG has a great selection of sizes that you don't usually see.  It seems that it isn't so much the brand when you get into this premium level as much as it is small things about the application.  Like coolant delivery to the cutting edge, coolant concentration, hole size, finish and location control, to peck or not to peck and does the pecking cycle chip the edge?  The other brand worth mentioning is Guhring.

Whould you please explain what makes you to think that OSG drills are the best?

Viktor,

Could you provide your preference for drill bit/end mill manufacturers?  Thanks.

RE: general consensus drilling question

Unfortunately, there is no one who produces these types of tools for the complete range of applications.  Some companies produce good tools for certain applications, others – have better technical support and service etc.  The tool geometries are similar for general application so the key now is in good tool materials (please note that submicrograin carbides are a panacea – coarse grain carbides work better for certain application – I can explain why), proper heat treatment (especially for HSS tools which are very sensitive to even small changes in heat treatment procedure), coating and application issues (the proper cutting regime, coolant, etc.).

In my personal opinion, there is a distinctive trend toward application-specific cutting tools.
