Dear Group Members,

I have following query related to subject post

Design Code : ASME Sec.VIII Div.1
Design Pre : 42 bar
Design Temp : 85 Deg C
Pressure rating : 300#, ASME B16.47 Series A
Equipment : 38” Blind Flange attached to existing equipment

We are replacing a 38” blind flange attached to existing equipment as we need to attach a piping on the blind flange with 6” connection.

Query : If we choose to perform area reinforcement calculation as per UG-39(b)(1) in place of UG-39(d).
To find the required area of reinforcement required thickness of STD. B 16.47 Flange is it mandatory to find the required thickness t as per UG-34 (C)(2) formula 2??

Based on interpretation no. VIII-1-07-69 (though it is for B 16.5),
My opinion is “yes” we need to find required thickness “t” in place of considering STD. Thickness as per B 16.47.
Does this means we are making this flange as custom design flange in place of STD B 16.47 Flange??

RE: 6" Opening on ASME B16.47 Series A 38" Blind Flange

Yes. There is no 'standard' 38" flange with a 6" [6NPS?] hole in it. So you have to start with a clean sheet of paper and design it. If it was me, I would fully reinforce the 6" hole and state that 'Flange meets the conditions of B16.47'. And hope that my AI was receptive to this argument.
