Pipe-section and meshing issues

Pipe-section and meshing issues

Pipe-section and meshing issues

(OP)
Hello all

I am new at Abaqus and i am having an issues with pipe-sections and meshing.
First of all i am trying to do an FEA of a chassis (I was told to do in a similar way to that shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3X62MDkxEg )
Basically make a 3D sketch (wire frame) and use beam elements to analyse.

To describe each wire dimension-geometry i used pipes and when i did that i had to choose between thick wall or thin walled elements (OD 25.4 t 2.2), i think this dimension fit the thick wall choice better.

However when i try to mesh with beam elements and run a data check the following error appears:

THE OPTION SECTION=THICK PIPE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE *BEAM GENERAL SECTION KEYWORD

I am in general new to Abaqus and FEA, but from what i understand, this means that beams cannot mesh thick wall, but i am uncertain, could anyone clarify?
Thank you
PS: it works well with thin walled

RE: Pipe-section and meshing issues

The ratio t/D is less than 10 so I'd say that thin walled would be better. However, you should select a pipe element rather than a beam element for the part for thick walled section to work.
