Welding across of compression flange of beam?

Welding across of compression flange of beam?

Welding across of compression flange of beam?

(OP)
Is there any problem welding across top of a compression flange of a beam?
Any where in AISC code stated? I appreciate a reference

Thank you

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

The only one that comes to mind right now is if one has cyclic loading leading to fatique....on the other hand, welding accross a tension fla is not a good idea....

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

Since it is heated during the process, I usually check the beam (if loaded) as if the flange wasn't there (and maybe a portion of the web closest to it).

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

If steel, not a problem. If aluminum, could be a problem. If stress reversals in either, could be a problem.

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

If you mean across of flange thickness, then the problem that the welding will cut/bit through the thickness which of-coarse not a good fabrication practice.

The beam will be installed first and will be under selfweight and trolly and hoist weight then they will weld this roof thing on top of beam.
I assume before the installation of the roof thing they are not allowed to lift anything till the construction is completed

Any concerns that I have to pay attention

Thanks

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

Is "roof thing" a technical for some part of the roof? I suggest you submit a sketch with dimensions and loads of what you plan to do so somebody could make an intelligent response. Otherwise any comment we make is merely a guess as to your plans.

RE: Welding across of compression flange of beam?

Welding across flanges for beams under load (specifically the tension flange as SAIL3 mentioned) can cause problems if the weld is done too quickly or hot.
The compression flange is a little different but I'd still take care to have the welder do it in stages across the flange so as not to totally have a plastic/melted flange at one time.

I'd also suggest doing what WARose suggests for more heavily loaded beams - but if it is only self weight then perhaps this isn't as big a problem.
