Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

(OP)
With a situation similar to the picture below (a beam with double angle shear connection connecting it to the web of a larger beam) is it acceptable to connect another beam with a single angle shear connection to the other clear side of the beam web and reuse (or replace with longer) bolts? The beam being framed into is acceptable for the additional load.

Similar to existing connection: http://www.dowcotech.com/uploads/a0/59/a059d6ac7b4...

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

I don't see why not if the bolts can take the load.

Bearing on the web of the supporting girder must be checked.

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

I don't see why not. But, keep in mind that contractor may have an OSHA / erection problem.

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

Josh:

Why do you think the contractor would have an erection problem? (Do not answer this) bigsmile Just extend the angle out far enough to clear the web of the existing beam by 3 to 4 inches. That would allow him to cut the new beam to the edge of the flange on the existing beam and slip it in from underneath. No worries.

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

Or he could just cope the flanges of the new beam.

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

May have to cut the web of the new beam too or there could be placement issues. It depends on the circumstances.

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

That OSHA ruling would not prevent connecting the second beam with a single angle, as the OP proposed...at least not according to my reading. But then, what would I know about OSHA?

RE: Add beam to opposite of existing connection?

If bolts are checked, why not
