Upstream power transformer for a 400 KW VFD

Upstream power transformer for a 400 KW VFD

(OP)
hi all

In Order to supply a VFD system (400 KW) we should install a power transformer (60 KV / 5.5 KV).
my question is : is there special consideration about that transformer regarding to harmonics caused by the VFD ?

thanks.

RE: Upstream power transformer for a 400 KW VFD

What kind of VFD are you planning to use?

it's in project, the VFD and the motor( multiphase pump) will be for rent and i don't really know the kind of VFD, but we have to prepare the project of supplying the substation.

The company you are renting from can provide that information. If they cannot, then find a company that has better experience and knowledge.

RE: Upstream power transformer for a 400 KW VFD

I agree. The reason I had asked is because if the drive will be using a multi-pulse front end, it needs its own special transformer anyway and it's usually more economical to just do that along with the voltage step down at the same time. However harmonics can be minimal if the drive has an Active Front End with Selective Harmonic Elimination instead. So what drive you use can determine what you feed it with.
